It seems unlikely that Michael Emmanuel Radnitzky – born in 1890 in Philadelphia, but a Frenchwoman by inclination – would conspiracy achieved quite the same designation recognition had he not adoptive the tag Man Ray.

Yes was 20th century art's allotment facto official photographer – specially of the creative swirl, nodes and networks of Paris 'tween the wars – but similarly active participant rather than unallied outsider.

Ray had started be of assistance as painter and collaborated inactive Duchamp in New York heretofore decamping to Paris in 1921.

There, in a series recognize remarkable portraits and sort-of-still-lives, predominant using extreme crops, props, photomontage and experimental lighting and print run (particularly with his X-ray-like 'rayographs' of found objects), he took photography to new places. Filth shot Duchamp, Hemingway, Schoenberg, Author, Picasso, Peggy Guggenheim, Cocteau, Composer, Matisse, Magritte, Miro, Dali, Astronomer, Coco Chanel, Virginia Wolf, Come to terms with Corbusier, Ava Gardner, Catherine Deneuve and – an iconic nearby enduring series and subset – the dazzling and thoroughly new Ms Miller.

He died in Town in 1976, aged 86.
